Cullman County is located in north-central Alabama. Neighboring counties include Morgan County, Marshall County, Blount County, Walker County, and Winston County. The county seat and largest community in the county is Cullman City. The county is home to several cities and towns, such as the city of Good Hope and the town of Holly Pond. There are also twenty-three unincorporated communities within the county including Bug Tussle, Jones Chapel, Black Bottom, Crane Hill and others.
Cullman County is unique, large portions of the county are dry, meaning that the sale of alcohol is prohibited. Alcohol is only sold in the cities of Cullman, Hanceville, and Good Hope.
Before European settlement, the area that would one day be Cullman County was inhabited by a variety of indigenous tribes like the Choctaw and Cherokee. The county was created by an act of the Alabama Legislature in January of 1887 from portions of several surrounding counties, such as Blount County and Morgan County. The county was named for Colonel John G. Cullmann. The county remained predominantly rural/agricultural throughout its early history. Cotton and strawberries were among the early crops in the area.
The county spans approximately 755 square miles, 735 square miles of land and 20 square miles of water. Cullman County is a thriving community where both the economy and the population are holding steady.
Public education in the county is overseen by two primary systems, the Cullman County School Board and the Cullman City School Board. Beyond public schools, the county is also home to several private schools, including Christ Covenant School, Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Elementary School, St. Bernard Preparatory School.
