Cullman, Alabama is a small city in and the county seat of Cullman County. It is the 41st largest community in the state. The city sits on the Brindley Mountain Plateau and is located about halfway between Birmingham and Huntsville. Cullman is an upper-middle income community in comparison to state economic standards and middle-income when compared to national economic standards. Cullman has a mixed workforce and job market, and nearly 21% of adults in the community have four-year degrees or higher. It has a humid sub-tropical climate which brings hot, humid summers and mild winters. Cullman has the global atmosphere and is proud to have a sister city, Frankweiler, Germany. In 2012, Cullman was ranked among the top 50 “Best Places to Raise Your Kids” according to Bloomberg’s Businessweek. It held this position due to economic and educational factors, low crime rates, diversity and other factors.
In April of 1863, the site that would one day be Cullman was the site of the Battle of Day’s Gap. Then, in 1873, the area was settled and founded by Colonel Johann Gottfried Cullmann and now bears his name. The community was incorporated 1878. Over the next twenty years, many Germans immigrated to the United States and many settled in the Cullman area.
In more recent history, an EF4 tornado struck parts of the city on April 27th, 2011. The twister caused great destruction to the downtown area, as well as parts of the Eastside residential areas. However, despite the level of damage, thankfully no lives were lost. Over the years Cullman has been home to many notable residents like actor and model Channing Tatum, Holly Williams a singer and daughter of Hank Williams Jr., Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Harold E. Martin, and others.
Cullman City is served by two school districts, Cullman City School District and Cullman County School District. Local schools include Cullman City Primary School, Cullman Community Comprehensive Learning Center, Cullman High School and others. The main tourist attraction in the city is the Ave Maria Grotto at St. Bernard’s Monastery and the main social event of the year is the Oktoberfest and naming of the honorary Burgermeister.
